The Science of Sugar

August 14th marks the start of National Science Week 2017. IN the lead up to the week, Year 9 and 10 Food Technology students have been studying sugar, learning about the many different types, how sugar affects the human body and how and why sugar is added to food.

Students were surprised to find out that just because something is natural, that does not mean it is good for you!

Students were also very surprised to find out how much sugar is in soft drinks, milk drinks and fruit juice. This is shown very clearly in the display students created for their assessment task.

Another big surprise for many was that it is recommended that people limit their sweet fruit intake to two pieces a day. This is because fruit contains the sugar fructose. Fructose is a sugar the human body cannot use and so it converts it to fat. Food scientists think that it is fructose, not fat, that is responsible for the current obesity epidemic in the Western world.

Science Week

Homemade Glue!

On Monday 14/08/17, the year six students came to visit the science lab for science week. We wanted to make the theme of science week stand out and we did an experiment about “Home Made GLUE!!” The reason why we chose this topic is because the commercial glue used is toxic for the environment. We wanted to raise awareness that as individuals we can help the environment and make safer products. The year 6 students were divided into groups and were doing the experiment by themselves and we supervised them. Overall the experiment was successful and the glue worked very well when students tried sticking different types of materials together.
